Equine dentistry has undergone huge advancements in the last ten years, as scientists have become more aware of dental disease and the large impact it can have on performance, health and welfare in horses.
These advancements prove that removing "sharp points" is only a very small part of maintaining a healthy mouth.
Research has proven that horses suffer from a range of dental disease including :
- Overgrowths / hooks
- Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease)
- Fractured Teeth
- Oral Tumours
- Displaced and Supernummary Teeth
Most of these problems can only be identified by a systematic examination, that often involves mild sedation and the use of dental mirrors and good illumination.
